Kolrosing is a traditional Scandinavian technique of decorating wood by making fine, shallow incisions with a specialized knife and filling them with dark powder, such as coffee grounds, soot or bark dust. Unlike carving, it removes no wood, instead splaying wood fibers to accept the pigment, which is then sealed with oil and burnished.
